Join Our Team as a CARES Intern (Community Advocates Ready and Engaged in Service)
Throughout this program, high school students will work with various departments at Harry Meyering. Under the direct supervision of the Community Connections Coordinator, students will shadow and work with various departments within the organization learning a wide array of skills and job types. These will include direct support, dietary, administration and finance and more.
Students will get hands-on work experience under the guidance of trained program leads.
This is a paid internship and students also earn school credit towards graduation.
Life Enrichment Internship
Hours: Monday-Friday, 4–8 pm; weekends, 12–8 pm (Hours may vary)
Interns will primarily participate in leisure and recreational activities with one specific site. Hours may vary slightly depending on the schedule of the individual the intern is working with at Harry Meyering. Interns should plan on coming for at least two hours unless other arrangements have been made with the site supervisor.
Responsibilities include:
Assisting with crafts, reading, outings, cooking, and other activities
Supporting individuals in skill-building, such as math or reading
Interns will work with people in a club or group setting, socializing and assisting as needed. Harry Meyering is always searching for volunteers to teach new skills and hobbies in a group or house setting.
Responsibilities include:
Assisting with crafts, game nights, karaoke, and more
Participating in monthly themed parties and events
Teaching or supporting hobbies in group settings
Social Services Internship
Hours: Flexible hours along with evening and/or weekend hours as needed
Interns will gain experience in program development, assessment, and community networking.
Responsibilities include:
Participating in program assessment, development, analysis and evaluation.
Participating in committees and individual or organizational team meetings
Networking with resources outside of the agency
Developing and supporting people served in recreational and leisure opportunities
Assisting in analyzing and developing processes to increase efficiency
Completing administrative duties related to the work of the Program Director and/or QIDP
Creating spreadsheets, tables and graphs to assist in identifying patterns of behaviors
Healthy Lifestyle Internship
Hours: Flexible hours with day, evening and weekend hours available
This internship focuses on health and wellness, offering opportunities to develop and lead educational programs.
Responsibilities include:
Planning and implementing health and wellness programs (with supervision).
Researching, developing and presenting written educational materials.
Developing and participating in events related to the needs of individuals served.
Developing and offering presentations on health and wellness topics applicable to the needs of the people served.
Developing and implementing health and wellness classes.
Participating in meetings as appropriate, including leadership, staff, and teams.
Completing tasks related to completing, updating and organizing health-related paperwork.
Adapting physical or occupational therapy exercises into daily activities.
Develop and offer sensory activities and experiences. This could include hobbies such as gardening and sensory crafts.
Nutrition, Dietetics and Food Services Internship
Hours: Monday – Friday, days and evenings
Focused on nutrition and food services, this internship offers a blend of hands-on and research tasks in meal planning and dietary health.
Responsibilities include:
Researching the possibility of and mechanisms needed for institutional purchasing
Completing food inventory
Researching and standardizing healthy recipes
Managing disaster plan requirements
Developing strategies for enhancing safe and sanitary conditions
Developing communication, interpersonal and professional skills in an employer-employee setting
Applying educational techniques, methods, and materials to realistic situations
Communicating with and observing the dietitian, when possible
Developing workshop(s) for in-service credit
Internship Requirements
All interns must:
Be at least 18 years of age or have written parent/guardian approval
Complete an orientation and possibly a background check or TB screening
Arrange their own transportation to and from HMC
An HMC Intern assists an older woman as part of the Life Enrichment Internship.
